GALAXIES

The journey of learning about galaxies stretches to as far back as the 4th century. Back then Democritus and Aristotle had things to say about our galaxy; the Milky Way. Democritus stated that the bright band seen in the night sky might consist of stars (not knowing what it was yet.) In 1610, Galileo used a telescope to see that without a doubt that bright band, the Milky Way Galaxy, is made of many stars. Galaxies weren't classified until the 1930s. They can be spiral, barred spiral, elliptical or irregular.
